Concerns about rising unemployment in the Maidenhead area

  • 17 Feb 2009

Theresa May has expressed concern about the rise in unemployment in Maidenhead and the surrounding area. New figures show that the number of people claiming unemployment benefits has increased by 84% since last year in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and by 127% in Wokingham Borough. The increase in Wokingham was the highest in the South East.

Commenting, Theresa said: “These are very worrying figures as behind the statistics are families whose lives have been turned upside down and who are understandably worried about the future. These figures are confirmation that the recession is hitting home across the country. I know from a recent visit how hard the staff at the Maidenhead JobCentre Plus are working to provide support to this increasing number of unemployed people locally. Unfortunately all we are getting from the Government at the moment is a series of announcements on employment that are more spin than substance.”
