Theresa May has published new figures showing the extent of the collapse in the housing market across the Maidenhead area.
Parliamentary Questions have revealed that across the country, the number of housing sales in 2008 halved compared to 2006 levels. The latest national figures so far for 2009 show even sharper falls have happened this year. In Windsor and Maidenhead there were 1,625 housing sales in 2008, compared to 3,589 in 2006 – a fall of 55%. In Wokingham there has been a 53% fall.
Theresa said, “These figures confirm what we already know – this recession has sent Maidenhead’s housing market into freefall. In the current financial climate homeowners and buyers need all the help that they can get. I want to see immediate action to revive the market, by measures such as reducing moving costs for home owners or giving some extra help to first time buyers who find themselves unable to get onto the property ladder.”
“Maidenhead has benefited from a huge housing boom and dramatic rises in property prices – we want to ensure that young and old people alike can still afford to come and live in the area and help our economy thrive.”
