Remembering Henry Congdon

  • 1 May 2018

On Monday 28 May, Theresa paid tribute to a local Fifield war hero, Regimental Sergeant Major Henry Congdon, at a special service organised by the Royal British Legion and Cllr Sandra Kieley.

Major Congdon, who died after being hit by a shell, has his name displayed on memorials in Sussex and Edinburgh but there was no record of him in Bray where he was once the former owner of the Fifield Inn.

Attending a commemorative ceremony at the Fifield Inn, where a plaque has  been placed in Major Congdon’s name, Theresa said:

‘Major Henry Congdon was a local hero who gave his life for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Because of the work of Cllr Kieley and the Royal British Legion, we are able to remember Major Congdon and this plaque will serve as a poignant reminder of his courage and bravery.’
