Theresa encourages Maidenhead residents to have their say on future of the town centre

  • 23 Nov 2010

Theresa May has encouraged all Maidenhead residents to have their say on important proposals for the future of the town centre, which could shape the character of the local area for generations to come.

The Maidenhead Town Centre Area Action Plan (APP) was published by the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead and is open to comments from the public until Thursday 25th November. Once the consultation is closed the plan will go to a government inspector for scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Theresa has offered her personal support for the plan. In a letter to the Royal Borough, Theresa said: “As the local Member of Parliament, I regularly hear from Maidenhead residents who are frustrated that the condition of the town centre has failed to improve over recent years… I believe the APP makes sound proposals to make the most of the advantages that Maidenhead currently enjoys and will enjoy in future, including the local waterways, our proximity to London and Heathrow Airport, and the development of Crossrail. Alongside a commitment to work for the overall greening of the town centre, the development of new areas for housing, business and retail can ensure that Maidenhead is a vibrant, pleasant and prosperous town for all its residents.”

Theresa also said: “I would strongly encourage local residents to look at the plans for themselves and to give their comments. If the proposals are to go forward then we need to show that they have the support of the whole community.”

Dear Sir,

Maidenhead Town Centre Area Action Plan

I am writing to offer my support to the proposals put forward in the Maidenhead Town Centre Area Action Plan (AAP).

The AAP Submission Document is an important piece of work that will hopefully shape the future of the town centre for generations to come. The proposals contained in it are detailed and constructive, and, should they be implemented, will herald a brighter future for the town. As the local Member of Parliament, I regularly hear from Maidenhead residents who are frustrated that the condition of the town centre has failed to improve over recent years. There is a danger that it will slip behind other similarly sized towns in the South East. The AAP presents an exciting way forward which can help to ensure that Maidenhead town centre is as attractive to residents and visitors as the countryside that surrounds it.

In particular, I believe the APP makes sound proposals to make the most of the advantages that Maidenhead currently enjoys and will enjoy in future, including the local waterways, our proximity to London and Heathrow Airport, and the development of Crossrail. Alongside a commitment to work for the overall greening of the town centre, the development of new areas for housing, business and retail can ensure that Maidenhead is a vibrant, pleasant and prosperous town for all its residents.

Finally, through you can I thank all those that contributed to the APP.

Yours sincerely,

The Rt Hon Theresa May MP
