Having received around 100 letters from concerned constituents in the past few months, Theresa May has stepped up the pressure on the Government to announce whether it will compensate policyholders who lost out as a result of failures in Equitable Life.
Theresa has asked the Government on several occasions to say whether policyholders will be compensated. Harriet Harman, the Leader of the House of Commons, has repeatedly promised that the Government would make a statement “in her autumn”. On Thursday, Theresa questioned Ms Harman in the Commons, saying “The clocks have changed and London has had its first snowfall. Does she still think that it is autumn, or will she now give us a date for a statement on Equitable Life?”
Following a request from local campaigner Liz Kwantes, Theresa will be discussing the issue further with representatives of Equitable Life next week at a meeting of the company with MPs.
Theresa commented, “Many local residents have contacted me with concerns about Equitable Life. The Government has promised to tell us what it plans to do about this, yet we are now in November and there is still no sign of any statement.”
