Theresa responds to government’s action on FGW

  • 27 Feb 2008

Theresa May has today responded to a decision by Transport Secretary, Ruth Kelly, to issue First Great Western a Remedial Plan Notice to address unacceptably the high levels of train cancellations on the FGW franchise.

FGW is being issued with the Notice for exceeding the threshold on cancellations in the second half of last year.

Commenting on the decision, Theresa said: “I welcome the decision by the Government to hold FGW to account for their disastrous service at the end of last year. A huge number of local commuters had their journeys disrupted by FGW’s continuous blunders. FGW has already acknowledged that its service was unacceptable and doubled its compensation to season ticket holders.”

“This Notice announced today is effectively an ultimatum to FGW: improve your service or your contract will be terminated. I will continue to keep a close eye on FGW’s performance, and hope that the Notice will lead to much needed improvements for Maidenhead and Twyford commuters.”
