Theresa supports call for more women MPs

  • 9 Jul 2008

On the 80th anniversary of universal suffrage, Theresa May joined activists outside Parliament calling for greater representation of women in the House of Commons. As it currently stands women make up only 20% of all MPs. The Electoral Reform Society fears that unless drastic action is taken this figure is unlikely to improve at the next General Election.

Theresa, who has vigorously campaigned to increase the number of women in Parliament, said:

“I was delighted to attend the event and I recognise that more needs to be done to ensure that a greater number of women enter Parliament. It is a disgrace that women MPs only make up 20% of the House of Commons and I hope that sufficient steps are taken by all parties to ensure that this figure is increased at the next General Election.”
