Theresa supports drive to boost the number of women playing sport

  • 23 Nov 2009

Theresa May is urging local community groups to bid for funding from the new £10 million ‘Active Women’ fund launched by Sport England and the National Lottery. The fund has been created to help get more women from disadvantaged communities and those caring for children playing sport.

Theresa said, “There are a number of challenges facing women wanting to take part in sport. Time constraints, childcare, transport, cost, friends to go with and self confidence can all represent barriers to women’s participation. I would encourage local groups in Maidenhead to visit the Sport England website and find out how to apply for funding. Possible projects could include setting up networks for running and ‘taster’ sessions in popular team sports.”

Details of the Active Women fund, including the prospectus, how to apply and frequently asked questions, are available on Sport England’s funding website: www.sportengland.org/funding. The closing date for applications is 3 February 2010.
