Theresa welcomes another local school becoming an Academy

  • 5 Jul 2011

Theresa May has welcomed the news that another local school has converted to Academy status. The Piggott School has followed Lowbrook Primary School to become the second school in the Maidenhead constituency to gain Academy status, which brings with it freedom from local authority control and greater freedoms over the curriculum and finances.

The Piggott School officially converted to Academy status on 1st July after entering into a Funding Agreement with the Department for Education.

Commenting, Theresa said: “It is great that another local school has successfully converted to Academy status. This will bring numerous benefits to pupils and teachers and will ensure that the local area maintains high levels of educational achievement. There are now over 700 Academies across the country, the majority of which have converted since this Government came to office. This shows that the Government was absolutely right to open up Academy status to a wide range of schools. I would encourage other local schools to look into this to ensure that standards continue to rise.”

The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, said, “Academies form an integral part of the Government’s education policy to raise attainment for all children and to bring about sustained improvements to all school. I am delighted that The Piggott School recognises the benefits Academy status will bring.”
