Theresa welcomes new research to commemorate the centenary of the First World War

  • 8 Nov 2013

Theresa May has welcomed new research conducted by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which demonstrates there are 62 First World War Commonwealth graves in the Maidenhead constituency. The Commonwealth War Grave Commission carried out the research as part of a programme of activity to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of war in 1914.

The Commission honours the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth who died in the two world wars and they care for cemeteries and memorials in this country and abroad. Some of the graves are of men and women who died at home as a result of wounding or sickness overseas. In other cases, graves remember those men and women who died on active service while serving on land, at sea, or in the air.

Research shows the highest concentration of graves are located in Maidenhead Cemetery and All Saints Churchyard, Boyn Hill. Theresa encourages people to visit the graves to mark the centenary of the First World War, and to ensure that they are kept in good condition.

Commenting, Theresa said: “I welcome the research carried out by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which shows there are 62 First World War Commonwealth graves in Maidenhead and the local area. Next year marks the centenary of the First World War and we should respect the graves of the servicemen and women who served during the War. It is important to remember those who served in both of the world wars and this does not just have to be on Remembrance Sunday.”
